Roy Harris: A View from the Collection

Leroy Ellsworth Harris (1898-1979), American composer, was born in Oklahoma, but moved at an early age to the San Gabriel Valley. He became world renowned as a composer of American music. Many consider Harris’ Third Symphony (1938) his most significant work; it has been described as one of America’s greatest symphonies. Harris was also an educator, and from 1934 to the 1970s he taught at a number of institutions including the following schools: the Westminster School of Music, Cornell University, Colorado College, UCLA and CSULA. Roy Harris received many honors and accolades over his lifetime. In addition, he was also appointed Composer Laureate of the State of California.
In 1973, while Mr. Harris was a member of the CSULA Music Department faculty, he donated his papers to the University, and the Library became the repository for his musical works and personal papers. These papers consist of approximately 3,000 leaves of original manuscripts and sketches, copies of published and unpublished works, 15,000 letters, commercial and noncommercial recordings, and other memorabilia.
The items displayed in this exhibit offer a view into the collection, which is located in the Special Collections unit of the CSULA Library.
