Today’s Item of the Day is an article from the College/University Times Newspaper Collection. The physical copies are stored in Special Collections and Archives, but much of the collection is available online at the CSULA Library website.
The
article, “A Summer Tale” written by Danny Ganguin, is from the September 17,
1962 edition of the College Times. It
is about Los Angeles State College’s (now CSULA) collegiate women’s tennis
team. It features a picture of 18-year-old Billie Jean King before she was a legendary tennis star and before her last name was King. Her maiden name is
Moffit. She married Larry King, an attorney, in 1965.
The rest of the article focuses on new additions to the team, including other notable tennis champions like Carole Caldwell and Carol Loop. All of the new recruits participated in 1962’s Pacific Southwest Tournament at the Los Angeles Tennis Club the week of the article.

By this time, King had already made
a name for herself over the previous summer at Wimbledon. She and her tennis
partner won the 1961 women’s doubles title, becoming the youngest pair to ever
do so. It was only the beginning of a tremendous career. Billie Jean King was
and is a crusader for women’ equality in tennis. She is also the co-founder of
World Team Tennis, and she was first famous female athlete to be openly
homosexual.
